Scarla

The pink fingers of dawn are burning away into blue when I arrive back at the castle.

I flick my hair before remembering I’ve cut most of it off, then wink at Rodney, one of the sterner guards with imposing black eyebrows and a furry black caterpillar living on his upper lip.

“Hi, Rodney. Do you have any big plans for the day?” He’s manning the castle doors and barely affords me a glance, but I swear the corners of his mouth almost twitched. Truly, it’s a miraculous morning.

With this idiotic grin still plastered on my face, I swan into the grand foyer and up the stairs, heading down the corridors to find Zaden. My belly swirls like soup being stirred as my feet prance along. I’m about to tell Zaden that I love him.

I don’t even care if he stumbles on his reply, but I don’t think he will. I imagine he’ll stare at me with those magnificent emerald eyes, then take my hand in his. “I love you too, Scarla. Be mine forever.”

Bleurgh. If anybody could hear my thoughts, they’d gag. I don’t know how I’m not hurling up my breakfast all over these stone floors at having to endure my own saccharine thinking. But there you have it-today, nothing can bring me down.

My thoughts are flying as fast as my feet. Zaden and I can be together until I die, then I will give him Gaze on my deathbed.

When I’m a little old lady, who’s lived a long happy life, I’ll lie in his arms and breathe my last sigh. That little spark of vestigial magic will leave my body and enter his, the same way it transferred from old Fra Perkins to me moments after her death.

The thought of dying peacefully in Zaden’s arms makes me smile. That should be enough for me. But I’m greedy, and I want more.

And maybe I could have it. He needs Gaze to return to heaven, and if I lead a decent life, I’ll go to heaven too. And we can be together forever in the immortal realm.

I clasp my hands before me and leap into the air like I’m some five-year-old girl dreaming of becoming a princess.

Thank the Maker nobody can see me. Imagine Sadie and Repulsive Ralph witnessing this. I would die.

I never imagined this was possible. A year ago I didn’t believe in angels, and now I’m planning to spend eternity with one. As soon as he inherits Gaze from me, he’ll be able to find the gates to heaven and join me there. He will achieve his centuries-long goal of returning to his birthright, and we’ll get to spend forever together.

As long as I make it into heaven.

I frown, wishing I’d paid more attention to the mechanisms of getting in. But I know that if I’m a decent person who does good things throughout my life, I’ll earn a ticket.

A laugh escapes me, sounding jollier and lighter than my usual dark chuckles. “I’ll just ask my personal angel how it all works,” I say aloud, loving the sound of my personal angel floating in the air.
